Bridge Adjusters

I began making my own bridge–height adjusters because I was unable to find adjusters of the same size in different materials. Having adjusters of the same size in different materials, allows a player to compare how various materials influence the sound of their particular instrument.

Currently, I make them from:

  1. Wood: maple, cocobolo, ebony, or rosewood
  2. Aluminum
  3. DelrinTM

Aluminum adjuster

DelrinTM is a relatively new high performance plastic being used in double bass bridges as bridge adjusters. It is very strong and dimensionally stable, and very suitable for arco players, because it imparts a darker sound.

The aluminum adjusters and the DelrinTM adjusters are made from one solid piece of material. For the wood adjusters, I bore out a piece of 3/8" threaded brass to fit over the wood post of the adjuster.

Wood Adjuster

My adjuster wheels are 25–30mm in diameter with stippled edges. I find these much easier to hold and rotate than the usual knurled wheel, though I will knurl upon request.

In my opinion, wood adjusters provide a sound more like that of a fixed (uncut) bridge.
