Rehair / Bow repair and Restoration
I was very fortunate to study bow rehair and repair with Dennis English, son of Jack English and apprentice to John Bowlander. Learning, first hand, the proper procedures on how to coax bows back to their original state by a master, was truly an inspirational experience. It became clear to me that a bow is simply an extension of your arm. In order for the instrument and bow to perform together properly, the bow should be as close to its original state as possible.
As with my bass restorations, all bow work is executed only after a thorough examination of the bow and discussion with the owner. Following is a short list of some of the most common tasks undertaken at the bow-bench while restoring a bow:
- Re-hair, white or black, top quality hair only
- Recamber / rechamfer
- Re-grip to your preference (silver, leather, baleen, etc.)
- New tip
- Frog repair
- Pinning of broken heads
- Clean and French polish
